Hey everyone,

I am in the process of buying parts for my t56 swap. I am wanting to install a trans temp gauge ( 2 5/8)
Which would be better to use?
A. A mechanical transtemp
B. An electric trans temp gauge

What are the pros and cons to both?
What range should I look for?
How do the get hooked up ( best way and most accurate )

I see they make a couple different ranges .

Also what are the benifits of having a wideband gauge ? What brand should I look into or are they relay not needed ?

 

Why do you want a temp gauge on a manual trans?

 

To monitor the temp of the trans ? Do people not do this for manuals?please educate me ?

 

I have never seen anyone do it.

With no easy way to ad a cooler to a manual, There is not much you can do. It the trans is getting that hot, you would probably have a lot of other issues.

Manuals typically don't run hot, thats why they don't have coolers.

I see cars with more gauges then an airplane, looks cool, but pointless.
Pretty tough to moniter that many gauges in a racing environment.
On the street, trans temp should never be an issue.

If you want to have a bunch of gauges for looks, go for it, otherwise i think you are just wasting money.

 

I never knew that theses gauges were only for autos.
I have bot instAlled any parts yet for my swap , I like to stockpile all the parts I need before installing them.

I don't like wasting money

Get a good shifter instead. (if you don't already have one)

 

Sofakindom I bought a mgw shifter. Herd great things about it over on ls1 tech .

Are there any gauges I should buy that are not a waste of money ?

 

Transmission temp guages and coolers are rare on manual transmissions-sometimes found on"endurance"type race cars though.Most of the heat with an automatic tranny is the fluid being thrashed in the torque converter.Do consider adding a guage for engine oil temp-electric easier to install,but electrics are usually short sweep dial.Most guages meant for engine oil temp go up to 340-350*.

 

I have never heard of mgw shifter. Pro 5.0 are the bast as far as I have ever known.


Only gauges that are not a waste in a street car are oil pressure, water temp, fuel level, tach and speedo. Others may be somewhat helpful for tuning purposes, such as Fuel pressure, and a wide band o2.

Others are just for looks, imo.

 

People over here upgrade to pro5.0 on tech where switching from pro5.0 to mgw so I jistfigured I would cut out the middle and just get the best? Either way it looks good feels good and will get the job done.

Hothe water temp is to monitor coolant right ?

 

Interesting. Too bad they don't make one for T-5's.

 

I have put trans temp gauges in manuals b4. Its not a big deal. If you want to know the temp then do it.
Mostly I have put them in road race cars but people do it for street/track day cars also.
I have even used temp gauges an coolers in the rearends of some cars listed above.
Are they needed for a street car, no.
