Which rear axle 1988 Z28 automatic

Located a guy parting out a 1988 Camaro Z28, says it came with a 305 TPI auto and noticed from an old picture that it has a sway bar and rear discs brakes.

My son needs a complete rear axle for 37 Chevy sedan..waiting for the guy to send a picture of the rear axle...but in the meantime..which axle might be in the car AND are the 88 rear ends decent for a streetrod that won't see a lot of pounding?

8.5" or 7.5" ????

Thanks

It's either the 7.5 10 bolt or the Borg Warner 9 bolt. Neither one is very strong. The 7.5 was designed for 4 cylinder Vegas. It will have 26 spline axles. Most street rods need a narrower rear end. The 3rd gen rear end is usually too wide. Look for a Nova or 1st gen Camaro rear end.

Do you know the wheel mounting surface distance?

I installed an S10 xtreme (8.5") 2wd rear axle in my 33 Chevy "fendered" coupe. The 2wd S10 has a 54.5" wheel mounting surface to surface distance. Fits great...but now I need 3.125" backspace wheels to center up in the fenders.

My sons 37 Chevy sedan has the same fender to fender "center" distance as the coupe (57")...it's more common to locate wheels with 4-5" backspace.

So knowing the width of the 88 F body axle would help.

Thanks

Re: Which rear axle 1988 Z28 automatic

I'm not 100% sure but I think third gen diffs are something like 62-63" from axle flange to axle flange.

The 88 Camaro will have either a 28 spline 7.5" 10 bolt or the Borg Warner 9 bolt. Neither are a good option for any kind of power. There's lots of parts available to the 10 bolt but no matter what you try to do with it, it will still have the tiny ring and pinion teeth. The BW diff is a little stronger but parts are much harder to find since it comes from Australia.

The only 8.5" diff that came in the third gen was the Dana 44. I was only available in the SLP Firehawk and over the counter from the GM dealers. It's no longer available.

i cant understand how you yanks cant put any power into a 9 bolt, we've got plenty 10 sec cars using them. the gm 9 bolt is an unbelievably sort after unit in Australia

in Ausralia the BW 9 bolt was factory equipment on 300hp cars back in '85 and didn't get upgraded until irs became standardin 98. The 25 spline unit wasn't great but in lsd you knew you were safe for 250 - 300hp and as i said 28 spline units were seeing some good power from the lads at ford and hbolden
