Axle saver bearings

Anybody ever use these? I saw in the axle tips and tricks sticky that the author doesn't recommend them. Just looking for some more input. Curious what others experienced. Thanks.

Re: Axle saver bearings

About 70% of them that I installed for customers leaked oil on their brakes and I ended up having to replace the axles, bearings and brake shoes. It ended up costing quite a bit more to fix it right after the leak. I ended up refusing to install them anymore. If you feel like taking a chance then go for it. In my opinion this is one of those cases where if you can't afford to do it right the first time then you can't afford to fix it right the second time. Just get a new set of axles along with the correct bearings and seals and be done with it.

Re: Axle saver bearings

Thanks for the input. I'm tempted to replace the axles. Especially after seeing these bearings for around $30 a piece. Also, if I understand correctly, gear oil renders brake shows useless, correct? Pretty much any amount of it?

Re: Axle saver bearings

Same deal here; never have had one of those really work out completely right.

Better to just replace the axles. They're not very $$$, makes ALOT more sense to just meet the issue at hand head-on and not try to find "shortcuts".

Yes gear oil pretty much takes brakes out of any semblance of functionality.
