9 bolt pinion removal

I am looking to remove the pinion from my spare 9 bolt housing. The carrier is out of the rear. The entire rear is out of the car. I'm pretty sure the pinion gear comes out by hitting the thread end of the pinion with a lump hammer with a block of wood to protect the threads? This is correct, having trouble getting it out.

leave the nut on the shaft, at the end, so that you hit the nut rather than the threads. Also, try a dead blow hammer first, if that isnt enough use a sledge but make sure you hit it square.

Yes, that should work. I use a chunk of aluminum instead of wood. Have you already removed the yoke? The pinion will come out easier with the yoke removed. You can put the nut back on the end of the shaft to help protect the threads.
