T56 Rear seal leak

I have a T56 in my Camaro from a 94 Bird. The problem I am having is I cannot get the rear seal to stop leaking. Before I installed the trans Last fall I installed a new rear seal because the guy I purchased it from said it had 120000mi on it. That seal leaked but I didn't worry about it too much and over the winter I rebuilt the trans. As part of the rebuild I installed a new sleeve bearing in the tail housing and a new seal that came in the kit and have the same leak problem. I leaks just sitting and while it is driven, after a couple hundred miles driving I have oil all over the rear bumper and tail lights. I am using the complete drive shaft from the 700R4. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Freeman

Re: T56 Rear seal leak

maybe try the no walk bushing from Tick? Its supposed to be a last ditch effort if you replace the bushing and it still leaks.

Is your driveshaft knicked up where the seal goes around it? Did that little spring come out that sits inside the seal and applies the required pressure to keep it tight around the drive shaft?

Re: T56 Rear seal leak

Excellent tip on the seal spring.

Take care of the basics from ground zero.

Degrease the unit, dust it with powder.
Is it leaking from the seal or somewhere else?

Is the casting porous or cracked? The F-body torque arm attachment is a compromise and it does break some tailhousings.

Is the slip-yoke in-tact? There may be a loose or otherwise open plug in between the yoke ears. The yoke may be damaged. The slip section could have damage involving a change in diameter.

Is the yoke reaching the seal such that it could have damaged the seal? The "long" dust shield section or "foreskin" on the late model seals won't cause or prevent a leak at the primary, tradition inner 2 seal lips.

The stock type lead babbit or bronze tailhousing bushings are not the problem if installed correctly and in good working condition. There's nothing a RSG No-Walk bushing will solve for a leak.
