T5 to T56 swap

I have read all the t56 swap threads. Everyone used a little different combination of pedals/slave/master. I just thought I would share my configuration and results.

Lt1 t56
T5 pedals
lt1 master (unmodified)
88 cavalier slave (modified inlet for hose to accept t56 line)
Lt1 flywheel
T5 starter
spohn crossmember
digital dakota sgi 5c

Mostly its a part for part swap. Just alot of work removing the brake master to change everything.
The cavalier slave required the opening to be slightly bigger. I went up one drill size carefully.
bled new configuration once it was installed on car.
cut the old t5 vss plug off wiring harness and installed a t56 style connector.
Installed the sgi box up by the vss buffer and used all the available wires that were needed. The power and ground are now shared with the buffer. The vss wires go into sgi input and sensor ground. The #3 output goes to the purple wire into the buffer.
clutch is in the middle of my pedal travel and everything works with minimal modification to wire harness and parts.

Re: T5 to T56 swap

yeah the more I drove my car after the cavalier slave swap the more I liked it. It makes more sense if you already have thep edals in your car, but it's so easily modified to fit and works so well...

I only had to remove it to change out the hyd master from the t5 to the t56 style.

DUDE YOU ARE MY HERO. I have a bunch of questions. I am doing the exact same thing.

Currently t5. Switching to t56.

Do you need to use an LT1 Master? Is this so you can use a long line? The current line looks like there is no way I could make a new one in the t5 Master.

How far back did you need to cut your floor pan? I keep seeing two inches. Just want to confirm.

What do you mean you had to modify the Cavalier Slave to get the line to fit? How did you modify this?

Thanks!

Also,

What kind of shifter did you use? Did it end up in the shift console place in a nice location?

The lt1 master is slightly different in size than the third gen and easier to mate too cavalier slave. I bought a complete lt1 master/slave set up. knocked out roll pin on slave, drilled cavalier slave slightly deeper to fit lt1 line. It only needs a little so go lightly.
Shifter opening didn't need the full two inch, I only had to go to the max edge of my stock t5 shifter boot. I do recommend a new or unturned t56 flywheel for best pedal feel.
I'm running a custom aluminum Hurst shifter but you only need a 1" spacer block to move shifter sideways to center in console.
Originally had a 6 puck Kevlar clutch but it chattered to much for street driving and I switched to a more standard style Hays clutch. Car is daily driven and has worked flawlessly. Will try to locate pics to help. Feel free to pm me

Re: T5 to T56 swap

Why is it easier to use the LT1? Its such a pain taking it out I'd much rather use the stock t5 master if I can?

You really think that turning my flywheel will mess up the feel?

If you could find some pictures that would be great. Thanks for you help

Yes it's a little work to remove but I like the fact that the parts are readily available and had minimal modification to work correctly. It also allows you to bench bleed it before you install. Although I have found I can bleed it in the car also. You would have to research someone else who modified the hose on a t5 and all the work it requires in order to work. I only mention the flywheel cause I originally used a turned flywheel till I swapped out the Kevlar clutch and found the new thicker flywheel made the pedal feel even better than before. It will work just fine with a turned one but pedal travel is slightly lower

Re: T5 to T56 swap

I just completed this swap. I used all stock t5 parts and extended the line using two 1/8 in barb to 3/8 in compression fittings and a stainless steel plumbing supply line. This allowed me to flex the line to where I needed. So far so good and the clutch works great with a new LT1 flywheel and Ram clutch kit.

Do you have a picture of your setup? I don't understand what kind of stainless fitting will go into the slave cylinder since its the pin style?

Re: T5 to T56 swap

I don't. I can get one after work, but I kept both ends of the factory line with the pin style ends. I just cut the line in the center and used the fittings on each side of where I cut. I can grab a picture this afternoon so you can see.
