700r4 stuck in 1st

My 700r4 is stuck in first. The thing confusing me is after I speed up in first to say 3000 rpm's the car doesn't slowly rev down it neutrals out kinda. If I rev the engine back up to 3grand it grabs first but when I let go of the gas it revs down like I put it in neutral. While rolling if I bleep the throttle it feels like it grabs something for s split second at 1.5 rpm's but first is up around 3 grand. Is it trying to grab second? shifting manually does nothing. oil level is good and doesnt smell burnt. Sorry if this is really confusing.

Check the governor gear. Pry the black round cover off the driver side, rear of the transmission. Pull out the governor and see if the teeth on the plastic gear are sheared off, or if the retaining pin came out.

Mine is doing the same exact thing, this is of course after I manually pulled it into first from stop then went WOT and manually shifted into second and the tranny didn't shift.

Re: 700r4 stuck in 1st

Pulled the govorner, no problems there. So I took the Valve body out and pulled out the 1-2 shift valve and it was stuck. No burrs or anything, must have just been a foreign object in there. Car shifts as before now.

You mean to say that the 700R is OK now??? If so--- what caused the valve in the body to stick?? Were there any Check ***** to look out for when letting down the valve body-----
Lastly---- Did you try using Seafoam Trans Medic. I might try using it in my 1st gear problem to FREE UP anything sticking. Hope you found a permanent fix for your 700R.

Hey jakemerritt- my 700R did the same thing--- suddenly it worked fine after months of not engaging- and NOW sos- I am thinking of adding Seafoam to clear out any debris and then test drive---- If its still NG- I will drop the valve body and visually check the 1-2 valve to see if its binding. Am I thinking Right here??? Or have I missed something----- I dont think its a worn or clogged governer gear- why else would both of us suddenly have normal shifting and then Na da. Let me know your progress JM ok? john from Long Island.

gents,,, allow me to elaborate... 3 things cause this #1 TV cable sticking/wrong part/out of adjustment #2 broken gov gear/ stuck gov #3 sticking valves in the valve body. now, sea foam does work, it can give you a few hundred more miles .but a trans rebuild is in your future when all this starts happening

I have only driven about 30 miles since pulling the valve body, but yes it is shifting as it was before. Yes there are check ***** in the valve body that you will need to keep track of, if you drop the valve body straight down you will be fine, it is cast iron and has some weight to it so have both hands on it.

I did a trans go shift kit a few months ago, I assume since I had the valve body out of the car something was floating around in the pan, got into the valve body and caused the 1-2 valve to stick.

I don't really use any of the "miracle in a bottle" treatments out there, I was a mechanic in the air force and when something is not working correctly there is a reason that typically requires maintenance or repair. IMO any pour in fix results will be short lived.

Toasted band will cause it as well, but you will typically incur slipping before complete failure.

Well gang--- I put in 1/2 a bottle of Seafoam Trans and warmed up the car in all gears. Took it out on the road and after 5 minutes of still being Stuck in 1st the car SUDDENLY shifted properly. YES I had an rpm/tach set up to read out all the #'swhile running on the road It ran fine on todays test drive . I had her up to 40 mph on the service road --all appears to be FIXED for now.
Sooooo could the Seafoam have freed up the sticking 1-2 valve that was causing the problem?? And shouldnt I expect this FIX to last? Since the sticking valve has been freed. Someone mentioned that any Pour IN fix with trannys is only temp for around 100 miles. Am I still looking at a possible future Rebuild even though its running pretty much perfect right now? thanks. john from long island.

what is happening is,clutch and / or band friction material is coming loose and sticking up the works. now, sea foam is a 3 part solvent,it can and will "dissolve" the crud. but only for a short time. select a trans shop, cross your fingers and have it rebuilt/up graded

Just a thought- Could being stuck in Limp Home Mode be confused with Trans problems. What is the mph range of Limp Home Mode?? thanks

700R4s don't have a limp home mode, they are not an electronically shifted transmission. They only have and electronic lock up.
