rpo codes or models

i'm looking to do the cheapest rearend swap I can do. I'm looking for at least a 3.23 posi and was wondering what model Camaro would be the best place to look I've tried craigslist and either I don't find anything or the price is crazy with no warranty. what rpo codes should I be looking for? I know that posi is g80 but don't know what model cars I should be checking.

Re: rpo codes or models

G80 is the RPO code for the limited slip differential in all GM cars and trucks. There are different differentials used in cars and trucks, but it's all the same code. The G80 in the trucks is the Governor Lock differnetial. In the 3rd gen Camaro it is usually the Auburn, but is a few cases it is also the Gov Lock. In the 4th gen it's either the Auburn or Torsen, depending on what year it is. In the 2nd gen and most cars with the 8.5 10 bolt through the '70s and '80s it's the Traction Lock most of the time, but there were a few Auburns in them too. In the 1st gen it was the Eaton Posi.

Re: rpo codes or models

Thk u! I've been thinkng about buying in the next few weeks a posi lock unit for my 91 rs that I will be taking the 3.1 out and dropping in a 5.7. The diff. In it right now is the stock open 3.23. The car is not for racing just for playing with every once in a while what posi unit would best fit this application? Thx

The '91 will have 28 spline axles, so if you can find a 3 series Torsen from a '98 to '02 Camaro that would probably be best. If you want somthing new then the Eaton Posi or Yukon Dura Grip are good choices. Just stay away from the Auburn. Also read this. http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19773

your name is "budget builder".. it doesn't get any more "budget" than learning how to do things yourself.. these things aren't complicated- they were designed to be slammed together every 60 seconds on a moving assembly line by people that may or may not have been hungover or still carrying a buzz from their lunch break, so fixing and modifying them at home isn't exactly rocket surgery.

It's not that hard. Just get a good shim set (nothing from Ratech) and new bearings with the differential and use a dial indicator to check the backlash.

read completely thru your writeup and I believe I can do this I also found this write up https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...axle-gear.html between you, this page, and the million or so questions I'm probably going to ask I think I can get this done. its almost time to start pulling motors and dropping the good one in so I figured its the best time to do the posi install I think I want to stay with the same ratio just want to make sure there is no damage to what is in there if it is then fix it b4 I start driving it a lot and definitely want a posi. thx man! I'll keep reading and getting educated.
