Why do people not use these as replacements for the T5? Are T56s easier or better in some way?

Have you ever gazed upon a S6-40? These things are HUGE, thje shifter is further back than stock and can't be moved and the clutch slave is interfering with the floor. furthermore they are set up for a dual mass flywheel and a pull clutch and a spingless hub oh and parts and repairs are stupid expensive. Then again, they shift like butter. I love the ZF6s I have a whole lot more than the T56s.

You can do a single mass conversion using a 4th Gen LT1 flywheel but you loose the DM dampening so you get the well known " rocks in a coffee can " noise out of gear @ idle

well, they only put autos behind the 350 in F bodies.. the 700r4 probably used the same case in the Vettes as the F bodies, with only the tailshaft and a few internal pieces being different...

so the answer is "mostly"... unless you were talking about the ZF 6 speed or the 4+3 manual transmissions, then the answer is "no"..

But... but.... but........... the seller TOLD ME it was "out of a Vette"!!

{which I know for a fact, as I watched him go out to a derelict parts car he had in his back 40, open the door, and pull it out of the back "cargo" whatever you want to call that back there behind the seat, which proved to my own eyes and would hold up in a court of law that it was in fact "out of a Vette"}

The T56 is easier to find parts for and less effort to rebuild. It's also a pretty straightforward fit for the third gens.

I know, I have 1 set up in my old race car with a springless hub and a non DM flywheel from a 4+3 vette...it makes quite a racket LOL That's why I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I'm also using an LT5 pressure plate and a longer ball stud on it.

If you are talking about an auto trans, no.
The vette case does not have a provision of a trans mount.
They share quite a few internal parts.
