manual to auto help

Just bought a 88 camaro and someone switched the car from a t5 to a 700r. The car will not hold still in park position and u have to push the clutch pedal to start. Is there any way to fix these issues. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: manual to auto help

Under the dash you should find large purple and yellow wires going to a switch near the pivot of the clutch pedal. These should be re-routed to the neutral start safety switch on the shifter, so that the car can only be started when the shifter is in park or neutral. Or you could just splice them, but please don't. As for Park not holding, you can check this out next time you drop the transmission pan for fluid and filter change. You should do this right away if you don't know the last time it was done. The entire mechanism is accessible from the bottom once the pan is pulled.

The wires that go to the safety switch on the clutch pedal have to be moved to the factory P/N switch at the base of the auto shifter
( if you actually have the switch in place )

It's supposed to be a fresh trans. It shifts firm but he said that park doesn't work bc they did the swap wrong. I thought park should be park regardless

If the shift cable was too short, or located wrong, it might not even engage Park. The bracket should be held to the trans with 2 bolts that hold the pan. If this isn't what you find, report back. Likewise if one of the bolts isn't actually going through the bracket, in which case they may have tried a TH350C bracket or a 200-4R bracket.

Disconnect the shift cable from the selector lever on the trans (drv side ) and see if you can manually engage P by moving the lever.

If you can't you have a internal trans problem.
If you can engage P , you have a linkage / cable problem.
With the shifter cable off at trans , put the shifter in P and see where the end of the cable lines up to in relation to the selector lever on the trans
