Australian 9 bolt to 12 bolt driveshaft length

Hey Guys. Quick question:

I have a 87 gta. It had a 10 bolt, drum, steel drive shaft.

I switched to a 9-bolt disc, with an aluminum driveshaft. I do not recall if the driveshaft fits just he 9 bolt or both...

I am now buying a strange 12-bolt (ordering today). I hear its a direct swap, except i need 93-97 lti brakes.

MY question is, will the aluminum drive shaft fit the new 12-bolt? Or must it be shortened? remember this is a 9-bolt to 12 bolt swap.

thanks -J

I went, 9 bolt to a 9" and used a stock length DS. I'm fairly sure yours will be ok. It would be best to ask the rear end supplier/ builder.

Re: Australian 9 bolt to 12 bolt driveshaft length

thanks.. they are idiots. I went through strange, moser and curry and nobody knows anything.. they are like catalog rears.

That being said I went with a moser 12 bolt. they say it is good to 900-1000hp easy. Strange said only 700 and they were worried about the clutches failing in the posi and gear noise. I am thinking and hoping moser uses better posi units.

I picked 12 bolt because it is a touch lighter and more efficient than a 9 bolt and it is a GM rear (not that that matters). I figure its not a bad choice. I almost went 9" and would have if the 700hp strange rear was the only 12 bolt option.

I wouldn't worry to much about the ratings, I've seen modified stock rears take a major beating with big power and I've seen stockers fail with a stock v6 5speed.

Your only saving around 3-4 rwhp by going with a 12bolt over a 9". You are saving some weight w the 12bolt unless your running a spool and aluminum center chunk in the 9".

Rear choice is a toss up, unless your spray n a 500 shot, on slicks, 7k clutch drop with a 6speed. Then you want a dana 60.
Just use the rear you want to and enjoy every day you can with your car.

yeah. that's kinda what I was thinking. Strange was just very tentative about their rears holding up... Moser wasn't..

I had a 9 bolt and went to a Moser 12 bolt. The stock drive shaft was a tad to long.

I figured they used a pinion yoke that would make it work properly for a "bolt in" rearend. Guess not.

yeah, I think I got the upgraded larger yolk. they said I should.. so I guess i'll need shaft work or a new shaft, but I guess that's par for the coarse. I would rather it not break.

i ended up with true track, no clutches or springs, so it wont break. or atleast is stronger than the strange unit. they said it wont chip or make noise.
