How to tell early from late model 700R4?

I know they have an early and late model 700R4, 82-84 and then 84 and up I think are the years. Is there any way, externally, to tell the two apart?

I have an 84 T/A and I now this isn't the original tranny for the car, the original owner who told me the transmission was replaced rather than rebuilt back in the mid 90's. I had the transmission rebuilt about 7 years ago it's starting to slip out of gear when shifting. I've heard good things about the later model and want to know how to check and see if mine is a later or early model.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Edit...

Called dana at Pro-Built, he told me how to figure it out.

87 was the major changeover year iirc, from the 'bad' to the 'good' 700r4. Ie run the codes stamped on the case, if it's 88 and over you're good. Mine is an 87, the upgrade year, and after chatting to Dana a couple yrs ago I've really gotta pull the pan and look to see if all the desireable upgrades are there. Most notably the aux valve body.

I don't think this is a definitive way to tell but you can look at the side of the case where the cooler lines hook up. The late model transmissions have a parabola shaped casting/parting line on the case that goes around the servo.

Good to know, I'll be looking for an 88 core then for my rebuild! Thanks for the info!
