rear end whining, time for a new rear end? help!
This morning I was on my way to meet up to head to the local toy run. As I get off the freeway, a hear a loud, howling/whining noise. So I went to a friends put the car on jack stands and seen what was going on. It was leaking oil from the u-joint area, and when I grabbed the drive shaft and wiggled it there was some play from the part that enters the pumpkin. I didn't take the rear cover off, Just put some gear oil in it and got home in a hurry.
Now the diff never tried to lock up on me, the tires weren't chirping when I turned or anything. Just had that howl noise. I haven't been back under the car because I just got it home but the part that connects to the drive shaft into the pumpkin seems to be the problem. I haven't checked for metal shavings or anything, but is it time for a new rear end or is there hope?
Its a 10 bolt rear end if that matter. 91 RS with a 5.7 tpi in it. 6 speed tranny

Sounds like its time 4 a rebuild. Slap some bearings and seals at it and it should be fine.

That's what I didn't want to hear
would it be better to rebuild it or buy a new rear end?
Part of me doesnt even feel like dealing with this car anymore. How much could I get for it as it sits? Interior is mint. Motor is fine just needs the rear end fixed

sounds like pinion nut may have worked loose-fairly common occurance with these axles, nut is in the yoke(part that enters the pumpkin)when this gets loose the pinon bearings back off, causing the pinion to be loose and mesh with the ring gear improperly-better take the cover off and check for chipped teeth or bearing particles. If no major damage found, could brace the yoke and retighten the pinion nut-not too tight or pinion bearings could be damaged-if not tight enough, bearings will turn on the pinion shaft and wear it.
Re: rear end whining, time for a new rear end? help!
Either the pinion nut backed off or a pinion bearing went out. It seems like you don't have the experience to do this yourself, so you probably need to find someone with experience working on rear ends and have them fix it. It could be anywhere from $100 to $600 to fix it. Good used rear ends for 3rd gen Camaros are getting hard to find, but you might be able to find one.

Shipping a 3rd gen 10-bolt is a pain. Common carriers require that it be on a pallet, hard for a buyer to do long distance. And it can cost $350-$500 per 1,000 miles of travel. In fact, it's cheaper to drive 1,000 miles and back to pick one up than it is to ship one, if you have the time. I know; I did.
