Carrier
Need someone to answer this for me. I have a 92 rs with the 308 one wheel john force burnout capability. I have located a rear from a 95 z the guy claims it's a 273 never knew the 4th gen z cars came with that. But anyways from everything I've read the axle splines are the same between the two so will the carrier from the z rear transfer into my rear? I want to keep my housing due to the tires sticking out. I plan on swapping the disc onto mine as well and I know that's do able. Thanks.

Re: Carrier
It will swap over, need new bearings of course. However what posi does it have? If its anything but a torsion I would pass on it. The factory albums are worthless and its doubtful it would have an eaton in it.

Re: Carrier
I won't know till I see it. It's a good price and it's already out. The guy is parting it out cause the motor and trans are going into another car. What carries am I looking for then. My car still has that monster 305 in it lol. It's going to be a couple more years before I go ls with some add ons. So it should be fine regardless right?

Re: Carrier
It'll bolt right in.
Can't say about "fine" though.
It's an Auburn. :barf: Better than an open but not worth paying much $$$ to get.
I guess we all have our own idea of what "a good price" is...
D00d probably wouldn't want to hear mine, for that item.

Re: Carrier
Entire complete rear 100. Figured that's worth it especially for disc brakes. Been wanting a 410 gear but wasn't going to put that in a open diff. So that's why I'm thinking about this endeavor

Re: Carrier
It will fit, but you will have to set the backlash. Don't even think that it will just bolt in without some shimming. Read the FAQ about 10 bolts.

Re: Carrier
So the main reason you’re considering this is because it has a posi unit. (Disk brakes came on many 4th Gens)
Stock posi units have a reputation of being worn out and those that are not will be. Not something I would invest in.

Re: Carrier
Guess I should have dumbed it down more in post #5 of the thread. I'm after the carrier cause I want a 410 but not going to put that ratio in my current open diff. I'm well aware of the 273 being junk. I just wanted to confirm the carrier would swap. I don't want to go buy wheels cause I do not care for the wider look the fourth gen rear gives these cars with stock offset wheels

Re: Carrier
This is why I would not invest in a 4th Gen. posi.
As far as the disks go they should be on many cars.
Even with the cheap $ 100.00 carrier you will need this to make it work =
1) The carrier you are considering = $100.00
2)4.10 ring and pinion =$ 200.00
3)master bearing kit = $ 90.00
4)axle bearings and seals = $ 30.00
5)installation/labor = $ 300.00 ( estimate )
total = $720.00 invested in a 4th gen. L.S.D.
That's why I would only buy a new quality 3 series carrier that will last and take some abuse and not one with a stock unit. But its your car and your money.
If you do buy it buy it for the disk breaks but buy a Eaton posi. unit that is top of the line. http://www.eaton.com/Eaton/ProductsS...als/PCT_339923 You can get one for around $ 450.00
and that I would invest in. As a matter of fact I already have. = https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...de-photos.html

Re: Carrier
I wanted to know if it would it work. Not all the other cons of it. I thought it would I wasn't 100% positive. Also it's unclear if it is a 2.73. The guy claims it to be but he hasn't confirmed it. So it maybe a 3.? As far as price you're waaaaayyyy off. I've already done the math. it will be more along the lines of 4 to 450. No 300 for labor that's taken care of. So thank to those who answered my actual question. I'll know more Saturday when I get to look at it.

Re: Carrier
My math is not way off. Not counting the installation the parts you will need come to =
$ 720.00
_ $ 300.00 (Estimate install price.)
= $ 420.00
I would say that's pretty much right on.
Well you obviously are aware of cons. and thats all I was trying to do. Not everyone is aware of them so maybe the information I supplied will help others make an "educated" decision.
Sorry if I came off as pushy and opinionated. That’s not usually my style.
I really am a very nice guy on this site and try to only offer information that I think will help.
One of the things I left out is why the stock posi. is a pour chose for a build, but I’m not going to because I believe I have wore out my welcome.

Re: Carrier
Ron I agree with you. I wouldn't install a used Auburn if it was free, but some people see it differently. If something new isn't in the budget then sometimes you have to get by with what you can. If the money is available then a new Eaton Posi or Yukon Dura Grip, or even a used Torsen would be 10,000 times better than the Auburn.
