rear end damage and swap

Less than an hour ago my rear end blew out. At least I think it did. The engine runs good, the trans shifts good, but the rear end started making terrible grinding and scrapping noises. There is an 89 at the local pull-a-part. I think this 89 is a V6 car. Will the rear ends change out direct or are there differences?

Re: rear end damage and swap

If your car is a '82 to '92 then the '89 rear end is a direct swap.

Re: rear end damage and swap

can I just swap my brakes as a whole unit or do I have to take the brakes apart?

It depends what's already in your car. We don't even know what year yours is.

The diff swap will probably have a different gear ratio. Your speedo will be out unless corrected with a different speedo gear set in the transmission.

Re: rear end damage and swap

So this swap will be a downgrade. Your '92 has 28 spline axles and the '89 will have 26 spline axles. What brakes does your car have and what brakes are on the '89?

Re: rear end damage and swap

It's a V6 car, so at this point all I need is it back on the road. once I get another car it will become a project, but for now it's my only transportation. Will the spline count creat any diffeculties in doing a swap? My car has drums and I believe the junkyard car does as well. Can I just swap my drums onto the new rearend?

the spline count only matters if you swap in a posi.save the axles from the trashed rearend.the brakes should be the same.

Re: rear end damage and swap

It should swap with no problems. If the brakes on the '89 rear end are good then no need to swap them. Hopefully the gear ratio will be the same.

Re: rear end damage and swap

What the gear ratio supposed to be for a 92 V6 with a 5 speed? This 89 is also a V6 but I think it has an auto trans in it.

Re: rear end damage and swap

According to the TGO database, a 92 V6 with a manual transmission will have 3.42 gear ratio. The automatic trans got 3.23 gears.

An 89 V6 got 3.42 gears for both manual and auto transmissions.

At least that's what came in the cars from the factory. After all these years, anything could be in the diffs.

Re: rear end damage and swap

So the gear ratios should be the same between the 2 rear ends, the only difference should be in the spline count which won't make a difference in actually doing the swap?
