Hello to all,
recent rebuild done by pro trans guy. Problem I'm having is, with the shifter set in the "low, first gear" position, and hold it there, the trans will shift into 2nd gear. My linkage and shifter are ok. A mechanic told me that the factory set up the trans this way to help not burn up clutches.

Any truth to that? And is there a fix in the valve body that can keep this car in first gear till I want to shift ?

Was your transmission just rebuilt "stock" or were any upgrades installed (shift kit, upgraded clutches, etc.)?

 

it was a stock rebuild, and it is an early 700r4.................no shift kit or manual reverse valve body

 

Shifting into 2nd on stock 700R4 when the shifter is held in 1st is normal. It was apparently done on purpose as an anti-abuse mechanism.

There are TransGo shift kits that will bypass this 'feature.'

sorry for just jumping in this conversation but I have a 700r4 transmission I came home the other night and went to put my car in park and the shifter won't go past neutral reverse no Park disconnected it from the transmission and the linkage won't turn past neutral. can somebody please give me an idea of what's going on with my transmission all gears 1st through overdrive work phone reverse work fine all day as well
