Eaton Posi Differential-which one?

Hi,
I have a 1984 Z28 HO. It is a project car, and I am slowly restoring/modifying the car. I started to work on the differential because I thought something was wrong. Sure enough, I pulled the differential cover, and Gov-loc posi unit is blown. Metal parts at the bass of the housing etc. I have gruesome pictures.

Since it is blown and needs to be replaced, it seems like a good time to upgrade, and upgrade to stronger axles. I have read all the FAQs and many threads, but I cannot find a definitive answer to a question I have.

This Eaton unit (19663-010), I know is a direct bolt in replacement for my car with 26 spline axles:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Eaton/362/19663-010/10002/-1

The Eaton unit 19599-010 is for 1988-09 GM 10-bolt 7.5" ring gear with 28 spline axles:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Eaton/362/19599-010/10002/-1

Jegs sells 28 splines axles, but will they fit into my 1984 housing? I remember reading that the 88-09 had longer axles.

Who would make 28 spline axles that would fit the Eaton 19599-010 unit and my 1984 housing?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Eaton Posi Differential-which one?

I would definitely go with the 28 spline axles with the Eaton.

The wider diff's started in 1993 for the f-body's. This was the start of the 4th gens.

Thanks! One more question. I remember BigGearHead said to stay away from the Alloy USA axles because of improperly machined C clips. How are the Motive Gear axles? What brand would you recommend? Thanks again.

I read the 10-bolt FAQs again, and i think I will get these:

Re: Eaton Posi Differential-which one?

The best axles I have ever used are the Superior ones. Part # EV10-4. http://www.streetsideauto.com/p/supe...nd-gear-ev104/

They're about the same price as the Moser or Alloy ones. But altogether better in every way than any of the others.

Yes, check Tom's Differentials. He also has AAM axles, which are great.

Thanks to everyone. Tom's Differentials does have the best price. I saw your thread USMC on the diff rebuild, very nice. I like the look of the diff cover. Does it some practical value, such as reduction in heat, etc?

Most after market covers will be a little deeper, allowing you to add more oil. This will help some in reducing the oil temp. The T/A Performance and other covers with the preload bolts will strengthen the rear end by supporting the bearing caps and bracing the huge hole in the back of the housing.

Re: Eaton Posi Differential-which one?

Probably not necessary but here it is anyway.
A photo showing where the load bolts apply pressure.
