leaking governor cap

my governor cap has a slow leak on it. instead of getting a new seal for it would i just be able to pull it off, take out the o-ring, and then use RTV on it to seal it? none of the local stores have the seal for it. i am hoping this will be a good substitute or not.

Re: leaking governor cap

The o-ring can be found in any transmission shop or ask the parts man at the auto parts store for one that fits a TH350, as they always used a o-ring type of seal and the 700R4 did not. If you want to use silicone, use the type that works with transmission fluid. The RTV type does not work here.

Re: leaking governor cap

i just had my governor cover off yesterday. i was surprised to find no o-ring. the rebuilder used sealer instead. they also didnt use the square cut o-ring on the tailhousing. i know it was leaking there. that o-ring i found at o'reilys auto parts. the governor o-ring i had in a re-calibration kit.
this tranny has had a mystery leak for a long, long time. when i keep finding that they didnt use o-rings, i understand why.

For the ultra black silicone it says it can be used for transmission pans. So I would guess it could work for this cap.

DID YOU finally fix the leaking fluid under the car. Was it the Pan? gasket ? or dip stick tube? Or Shaft seal ?
