700r4 woes

Anyways, My 700R4 Grinds when going into reverse from park. Get into the street, put it into drive and and then it clucks and the tires chirp (foot off gas peddle, on brake), worse when going from Park to Drive. If I drive next to a wall or something I can hear the trans faintly grind through first and second. Fluid is clear red, smelly but not burned smelly.

The other night I made the brave decision to race the wife (late night, sitting at a red light). It launched off the line, but at about 30MPH it couldnt decide what gear it wanted to be in, RPMs all over the place, and then i could smell it for about 4 blocks. Race lasted less than a block. I won

Car still drives but it makes louder grinding and clunking noises. Can it be fixed or is it a total rebuild?

I hate to take it to a shop because they will charge to tear it down for examination, and if I dont give in to there demands I will have to tow it home with all the bits in the trunk.

Drop the pan, If there is metal in it then it will need to be rebuilt anyway.

Re: 700r4 woes

That thing sounds beyond shot, i would go to the scrap yard pick up a used one for 300 bucks and call it a day .keep the old one and have it rebuilt or if your brave enough buy a rebuild kit and tackle if yourself ,

Re: 700r4 woes

id go pick up a cheap one from a jy or craigslist or something, throw that in then buy a rebuild kit with upgrades that you may want and learn from it. doesnt sound like a very easy fix.

There is only one 3rd gen in the JY, a bunch of 4th gen camaros, all V6 cars.

Re: 700r4 woes

Gm used 700r4s in everything . Vans trucks all kinds of stuff. If you walk in that junk yard and they dont have a 700r4 for a v8 you should tell them they are a disgrace ! ; )

Just pick one with the same tail housing length. Swap housing.

Get a used 700R4 from anything but a Corvette, or 4x4 or diesel pickup.

Re: 700r4 woes

I have a theory about junkyard parts. They are there for a reason. How can I tell if the trans is good or not?

Re: 700r4 woes

ID a donor that is wrecked. Chances are it was running fine up until it found it's home in the JY.

Otherwise good clean fluid, and if you can pull the pan-lack of friction material.

Took it to the trans shop here in town. they said the grinding is the Planetary gears, and the 3-4 Clutch pack is gone. Going down for a swap on friday.
