Reverse lockout t56, samoco
Hey everyone I've been gathering up parts for my t56 swap for a LONG time now. I am trying to get EVERYTHING needed for this swap. I want to do it once and do it right.
The car is an 87 iroc with 350 and a ton of goodies.
I want to get this
http://www.samocoind.com/T56MODULE.html
How ever I am not sure which options I need m and where would these connect to?
I have the 4th gen pedals.
Nothing at this point is installed, Nor will it be installed till I have 100% of this swap.
also Is this needed ?

Re: Reverse lockout t56, samoco
I simply wire the lockout through a brake and a clutch switch, whenever you are driving and shifting to 6 you never are depressing the clutch AND the brake, only when standing still to go into reverse. Cheap & simple.

Re: Reverse lockout t56, samoco
Looks like that kit ties into the vss signal from the transmission.
Another option (that I used) is to open up the solenoid and cut a coil off of the resistance spring inside. Allows you to manually override the solenoid with a little effort at the shifter. I think I cut 1 1/2 coils off until the reverse shift was comfortable but still required a bit of effort.

Re: Reverse lockout t56, samoco
I don't mind spending the couple bucks for the samoco. I just want it to work well and do its job and the cleaner the better( which I know is up to me on how messy or neat it comes out.)
I rather not cut the coils off the springs. I don't want to have to force it.
like I said before I don't want a half a$$ hackjob , I want it to be smooth like factory.

Re: Reverse lockout t56, samoco
I'm in the same boat. I have seen several options.
-tie it into your brake pedal
-tie it into your clutch and brake pedal
-tie it into your brake lights
-tie it into your speed sensor(I am hooking mine up to where the 1st 60 seconds its available or anytime the car is below a RPM threshold through megasquirt) Not sure what ecu you're using so not sure if that option is available
-the sensor you posted (Didn't your car come with a mechanical speedo...... If so this may not work)
-muscle it over

Re: Reverse lockout t56, samoco
The car may have come with mech speedo, but the T56 does not have the provision to run it. You'll have to either convert the speedo to electric or convert the trans tailshaft to run the mechanical. Either way you'll be able to either tap into the VSS signal at the mech speedo (in the guage panel) or the VSS coming from the tranny.

I bought the Samoco unit and installed it, it was very easy, 1 wire to VSS, 2 wires to reverse lock out and a power and ground wire. I installed it under the consol, works great

I didn't wire mine up. I just push through it. It's really not that difficult. I'm only 6' and 170 lbs. So most should be able to do it.

No problem. Just figured you may have had some pics from installation. ( I normally take ton of pictures when I am installing stuff on my personal vehicles...Not so much at work ever...lol)
I am sure it works well for you, I just would rather do it another way ( I am 5'10' 135lbs. great race weight hehe got no fat on me)

Re: Reverse lockout t56, samoco
I would recommend getting the t56 converted for mechanical speedo. Forum member ALLOY does this work and does a good job. Then install a VSS in the tranny for the sole purpose of providing speed info to the Samoco box. That way there is not goofing around.
The F2B dust cover is a nice addition to cover the hole.

Re: Reverse lockout t56, samoco
I think it depends on the driving style. I am actually shifting 4th to 5th when on the brakes all the time. This happens mostly with spirited merging onto the highway, where you end up much faster on the on ramp than the flow of traffic.

I have read a ton about Ally and his amazing work. I am undecided on what I want to do since if I want to swap my gauges out later on I can't go full electronic. should that even be a problem? I've read a bunch on how the stock gauges are not the most accurate. I do not have the know how/tool to make a nice gauge cluster either. ( I don't want it to be a hack job. )
I was THINKING ( I am not set in stone) about buying this when I get around to it. http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.c...rod/prd886.htm
Or is their a better option?

Re: Reverse lockout t56, samoco
Your mechanical speedo already has a VSS buffer attached to it within the guage panel. The VSS signal is required by the ECM and the signal is also sent to the cruise control. If you're using the stock ECM for engine management, it will need to appropriate VSS signal. The VSS signal from the T56 will be way high.
Easiest option is to convert the tailshaft for mechanical speedo function. Everything else continues to work as intended.

Re: Reverse lockout t56, samoco
I originally had an Abbott-X mechanical speedo converter box but it was bulkier than I liked, was going to require a custom speedo cable to put where I wanted and for the cost, the tailshaft conversion was only like $70 more (including shipping) and resulted in a much cleaner install.
I also had the reverse lockout wired into the brake switch which was okay, however, I'm about to put the T-56 into my firebird in a few weeks and ordered the Samoco module today. I'm with you, and a few others, about wanting it to operate and feel like it was installed at the factory.
