lower gears input

Until I finish my 383 I am going to kick around with the factory 10 Bolt....Here's where I need input...Currently running a slightly modified 350 4bbl with a 700R automatic with 3:23 gears.. In 2 weeks I will have the gears changed to either 4:11 or 4:56. I am looking for info from those of you running the 4:11 and 4:56 gears and your opinions of these gears. This is not my daily driver and is used for fun so I don't care about gas mileage.

The car is a 1984 Camaro Z28

thanks

Re: lower gears input

Well I can tell you this. You won’t have much 1st gear with a 4.11 and almost none with a 4.56.
The 700r4 has a fairly short 1st gear to start with.
Also you don't say if you have or are going to install an L.S.D/Posi.
With any kind of power and no posi. traction you will sit there and spin one tire on a launch unless you feather it off the line.

With those gear ratios you mention you should have a "strong working" posi.unit and decent tires if you want to use them.

I run 4:56 with a Detroit locker, I have a 2.97 low first gear in the car, I have absolutely no problems with driving the car, with the t56 in 6th gear I am driving at 70 mph at 1800 rpm on highway

Re: lower gears input

Thanks for your reply U.S.M.C I have an Aubrn posi unit and will upgrade the tires as needed. The car will be used for 1/4 mile drags.

Re: lower gears input

How fast you expect car to go? And what rpm is shift point? A 5500 rpm 100-105 mph mild 350 will run out of gear before you reach 1/4 mile. Thats using all 4 grs of the 700r4. I would not go 4.56 for track racing unless 1/8 mile

4.56 with 26" tire gets you to 101 mph at 6000 rpm
4.11 would do 112

If you have any kind of power and expect 110+ mph traps, you'll need to turn alot of rpm with those gears
