700R4 Leaking Fluid & Over Revving
About 2 miles from home my car started smoking out the rear. I was on a highway doing 60 in overdrive. I slowed the down the car, made a left into my community and when I tired to accelerate again the car was over revving. I was pulling 4000 rpm in overdrive at 25 mph.
I drove the car for about two miles like this until I was about 1/10th of a mile from home. I was infront of a good friend's house who knows a bit about cars. The motor was over heating and what ever fluid was left in the transmission leaked into the pavement. We briefly looked under the car and the pan was still there. Perhaps a gasket or a bearing seal broke and is causing the leak?
It seems like the transmission only has park, reverse, and 4th gear. When the rain stops ill look under the car to see if anything obivious is missing. Anyone have any idea of what I should look for? I don't know much about transmissions or what is what.
Also since I drove it for 2 miles at 60 and 2 miles at 25 while it was over revving could that have caused any internal damage?

Re: 700R4 Leaking Fluid & Over Revving
It could be the front pump seal that is causing the leak and it could be that the lack of oil is causing the slipping etc, but it sounds like the transmission is smoked to me. It may be rebuild time. Someone with more knowledge will comment soon.

Also if it's totaled would a rebuild or a new transmission be better?

If the fluid smells burnt then there is already damage inside from burning clutches. the only fix is to replace or rebuild.
Let the car cool off and you can try to fill it back up to the proper level and take it for a short test drive. But remember you now have trans fluid all over the exhaust so be careful with that fire hazard.
make sure its not pouring on the ground as fast as you put it in. Have the engine running while filling.
If it is full and it is still slipping then there is no use in finding a leak. my guess is that it encountered an internal problem and overheated thus blowing all the fluid out of the vent tube.
Just keep in mind that the whole time you were driving it that way the clutches in the trans were slipping. It only takes 7 seconds or so of that to burn clutches to the point of replacement.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

In the mean time any idea what could be leaking in the front?
