Trans mount torque setting?

I have the 2 piece crossmember with the rubber disks that seperate the 2 pieces. I purchased a poly kit (3.1109g) to replace the factory rubber disks and need to know the correct torque for those bolts.

I also purchased the poly transmission mount (3.1142g) and I need to know the torque spec for these as well. These values are not covered in the Haynes manual.

Is there a difference in the height from the top of the 2 piece crossmember to the bottom of the transmission verses the solid crossmember. I know some people have had issues when using the poly mounts. I know if the secondary mounting plate was removed from the 2 piece mount it takes off around 1/4 of an inch or so from the thickness of the crossmember. BTW, I know it needs to be there to work.

So, does the transmission tail sit higher on the 2 piece mount than it would on the 1 piece mount?

Does anyone have both the 2 piece and solid factory mounts to compare side by side?

Re: Trans mount torque setting?

I have the 2-part crossmember you describe, but if I can't find a used 1-piece version then I'll be modifying mine. I see no reason to keep those extra bushings, lose space, and add weight, plus now you're out the extra cost of the bushings.

Well, if there is a dimension difference between the different mounts than it could cause an issue if the 2 piece mount is modified incorrectly. That is why I was curious if anyone had both mounts to compare side by side.

Re: Trans mount torque setting?

My car was originally equipped with the secondary cross member. I swapped to poly. You may not mind the vibration and harmonics, but for me they were nothing short of awful—far worse that the poly mount I tried on the one-piece cross member. All that said, I went back to OE rubber.

Best of luck,

from the first dozen pages of a Haynes Manual; not the third-gen one, though:

Re: Trans mount torque setting?

Well, I talked to Energy Suspension about the mounts and they said that the 3.1142 was made specificly for the third gen. They also stated that if you need a shorter mount to use part number 3.1158.

I have 3.1108, 3.1109, and 3.1142. I'll figure out what works on my car. I already have a vibration, but my factory mount has already failed, so it could be the mount. I only feel the vibration when accelerating, not while coasting. I've made quite a few changes to the car with all the work I have done so far. Between the front end rebuild, the transmission change, and the drum replacement/shoe change, I've been all over the bottom of the car. I have so many new parts on it, it should feel different in a lot of ways. I just have a few parts to get bolted on and it will be ready for a test run.

Sorry, I know some of this is off topic. So, I will stop there. Thank you jmd, that is what I was looking for. That page is missing in the old manual I have. I have ordered a new one.

Re: Trans mount torque setting?

You're welcome.

I'm glad to see you doing some research and I'm certain you'll be able to get to the bottom of the vibration.

I rode in a third gen with a solid trans mount on the 1-piece crossmember, that was worse than noticeable. So personal comfort may need to be balanced with performance.
I just ordered the shorter one. I don't mind a longer bolt and a stack of washers if it's too short, but it makes it easier to put things where you think they belong.

If you missed the following link, you might find it an interesting read:

I read through the other thread you posted and was wondering, since you had the 2 piece crossmember, did you use the poly bushings 3-1109 for the secondary mount as well as the 3-1108?

When I took my transmission out I noticed the torque arm bushing and transmission mounts were damaged. I also noticed one of the secondary mount bushings was oil soaked and very spongy. So, I replaced the torque arm bushing with part number 3-1112G. I will use part number 3-1142G as the trans mount and part number 3-1109G on my secondary.

Several years have passed since I used the mounts so I don't recall the part numbers, but those numbers seem correct. My hope is that you have better luck with the poly than I did. You might consider reporting on your experience when you've completed the swap.

Re: Trans mount torque setting?

So, I replaced the torque arm bushing with part number 3-1112G. I also used part number 3-1142G as the trans mount and part number 3-1109G on my secondary. This combination removed the vibration I was feeling.

Anyway, this combo worked for me.
