I need to know how to proceed in finding the problem. My 700R4 will not shift in to third gear unless the shifter is in D. It goes to nuetral if left in OD. If I put the shifter in D from the start, it shifts though the gears fine, then I manually shift to 4th. When decelerating, at 40 mph it goes to neutral unless I manually downshift to D. What could be the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

seems like...and im no pro..but a problem in the valve body?....you did check your fluid levels,yes?....check ball/accumulator...seems like a trans guy would make ez work outta this...

 

Yeah, the fluid is fine. I asked the trans shop guy about it and he said $400 to look at it! Ha! The trans doesn't slip or shutter, it just doesn't shift to 3rd on its own. Maybe someone will chime in on it.

 

Do you have engine braking once you are in third gear and let off the throttle? Or does it fall back to an idle?

 

I have engine braking in third as long as the shifter is in drive.

 

Also, with the shifter in drive, it will shift through the gears fine. Nice quick shifts. No hesitation at all. Likewise, above 40mph, when I put the shifter in Overdrive, it shifts immediately to 4th.
