83 transmission help

I have an 83 that when I got it someone put a 350 turbo in. I'm going back to a 700r4 but worried how to make lock up work. The 700r4 is a 2000 model. Not sure what to look for on car or as far as a kit. Any help or suggestions would be great. Going 3000 stall if that makes a difference.

Re: 83 transmission help

If the engine is running on the ECM, use the stock wiring. You'll probably find wiring diagrams here if you search and read enough.

If the trans. is from a 2000 car or truck, it's a 4L60-E and needs a powertrain control module to shift and lock up. An independent controller for 4L60-E is several hundred $ from the aftermarket. Your more straight forward option is to buy a 700-R4.

Re: 83 transmission help

Last year of the 700R4 was about 93 or so. No such thing AFAIK as a 2000 700.

You should do more listening and less arguing.

4L60E looks EXACTLY LIKE a 700, inside & out, except for the control system. The 700 (aka 4L60 in its later years) uses all hydraulics; 4L60E is electronically controlled.

Once you trade what you have for a 700, there are several kits you can buy with all the goodies to make a reasonable controller for the lockup. Not too much $$$$ even.

Don't forget also, whenever you get a 700, you'll need to get a Camaro/Firebird extension housing, otherwise there'll be nowhere to hook up the torque arm.

Re: 83 transmission help

Sorry I meant 90 trans. I should have proof read. And trust me I do listen. I come here for third gen specific knowledge and appreciate when I get it. That being said, I know what the trans is. I know how to fix it. What I'm asking for I guess is whether the 83 had this already. But thinking on it. It was different 700r4s in 83. So may have answered my own question.

Re: 83 transmission help

The car should have an electrical plug to connect the TCC. That's the system that controls overdrive. I'm not sure exactly where it's located but believe that is the only solenoid in the trans.

Re: 83 transmission help

Amazing sometimes how much those pesky details matter...

83 was the first year for the 700.

Nothing about it changed during its entire product life cycle, as far as external connections were concerned.

If your 83 car came with a 700 (or 200C, which was the prior equipment, and some early production 83s might have got those, I don't know) then it should already have the wiring, correct connector, correct ECM programming, etc. to just plug in and work. Of course you'll still need a Camaro/Firebird extension housing, regardless.

Re: 83 transmission help

Any 1990 2WD Chevy bellhousing pattern 700-R4 is bolt-in for an 83 if you swap the F tailhousing on. The Vette output is shorter so you have to be exact with slip yoke and driveline length or better yet, put the longer output shaft in.

Overdrive is controlled by the same TV cable setting and internal transmission hydraulics as 1,2, and 3. Lockup is controlled by the TCC circuit / wiring.

Good luck w/ your swap.
