Where can I find a 3.42 rear end?

I have a 91 camaro rs. I want to switch the factory 3.08 to a posi 3.42. Should I just try to find a whole rear end? Or just buy the spline and carrier for it? My dad is gm master mechanic and is great with rear ends. But still, what should I do?

My thirdgen came with 3.42 gears originally. I think most of the V6/T5 cars got that rear gearing. I swapped mine out for a 3.73 rear gear myself. First time I ever did a gear swap and I had no problems. Just the gears will be cheaper than a whole rear, but is more work. Or you could do what I did and put them in a fourthgen rear and get posi and disc brakes at the same time.

So a 4th gen rear end will fit a 3rd gen?

It will fit but it's about 4 inches wider. The tires will stick out a little.

It's a lot easier to install a limited slip differential (posi) than it is to set up a set of gears. You could install the LSD in the 3.42 rear end if everything else in the rear end is in good condition.

Don't forget to change the speedo gear to keep your dash speed accurate.

whats the diff with the gear ratio anyway, hows that work like the higher the ratio the more torque somethin like that?

Higher the ratio, further the tire will travel per turn.

Re: Where can I find a 3.42 rear end?

Gear ratio has nothing to do with how far the tire travels per revolution. Gear ratio has to do with engine RPMs at certain speeds (transmission and tire diameter also must be considered) and leverage, or torque multiplication.
