Just curious as to how much a stock drivetrain can take? My car is a 1987 iroc, not sure what the original engine was. Currently it has a pretty much stock 350, carbed, not a lot of get up and go. I believe the trans is a 700r4, and rear is a 10 bolt no sure on ratio or spline count.

What I am looking to do is build a 383 hoping to get about 400 to 450hp.

Will the trans and rear end hold up? Is there any common upgrades I can do to make them a little stronger like a shift kit, and a stronger carrier maybe a posi unit and stronger axle shafts? Car will mostly be a DD, might see the 1/8th mile once or twice a year.

 

Any ideas? Just looking to try and figure out what type of cash I'm going to have to invest to get what I'm looking for?

 

Some people tear up the stock stuff with a 6-cyl.

Other people take theirs to the track with twice as much HP as you'll likely have, every weekend, and it lives.

The LS1 cars have THE SAME running gear you have, no difference; and lots of them run deep into the 11s.

How lucky do you feel today?

2 things tear up that part of a car: shock loading (big smoky clutch dumps and donuts and other childish abusive behavior), and TRACTION. Avoiding either one will prolong its life. Avoiding both will make it live mostly forever, aside from just the luck of the draw.

 

Makes sense. Not too into the whole car abuse thing and don't have a clutch to dump. May add a traction device of some sort, probably a posi. Running stock size street tires. May get a set of slicks if I do start bringing it to the 1/8th, but that is only once or twice a year, and I do know that at some point something is going to break. I just don't want to have to replace something every time I want to bring it out to the track.
