All 700r4's the same?
All 700r4's the same?
i know that there are stock and HD mods. but i am looking to buy a new tranny and I see 700r4's for 4x4 and 2wd vehicles. some come with transfer cases. i am just wondering if any 700r4 will fit in my 89 camaro or if i need to find one that was in a 2wd vehicle?

You will have to use a 700R4 from a V8 2wd vehicle.A V6 will have different valvebody calibration & governor setup, but, can work.A 4x4 trans will have to be torn completely down to install the correct tail shaft.

Mine was taken from a 4x4 truck because I wanted the later version.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate your responses. Very helpful. A guy said he could put a 700r4 in from an 89 firebird. he isn't sure how many miles it has. does that sound extremely risky? i don't have the funds to buy a heavy duty tranny at this time. I plan on doing it in the near future, 1-2 years.

As long as the engine in the '89 Firebird and the engine in your car are both either a V6 or a V8, the transmission will swap in. If one is a V6 and the other a V8, nope, won't bolt up to the engine.

There are multiple v8 calibrations most of which have pretty lame shift points. The F-body has 5000-5500 rpm wot shift points and complementing part throttle shift points. Changing the governor weights in a run of the mill v8 700 usually give you less than desirable part throttle shifts. I have a spare F-body valve body if anyone is interested.
