Reverse input drum endplay???

ATSG manual says .150 is ok and to not try and shim it any. What would be the minimum or maximum endplay to look for? And how would someone accurately check this?

Do you mean input shaft end play? The ATSG manual should have a table in it that lists selective washer numbers and their thicknesses.

I check it like this ('03 4L60E shown):

I can't recall what the range the end play should fall within but that too should be in your ATSG manual.

Re: Reverse input drum endplay???

Checking the input shaft end play I got. It's the clearance between the reverse input drum and the pump stator I'm fuzzy about. Guess I can measure from the case down to the reverse drum and then measure from the pump to the surface of the pump stator washer. The difference would be my clearance. The manual says .150 is acceptable, but that seems way too much too me.

Is this one of those clearances that doesn't matter that much unless it gets to be excessive?

I've never come across a spec for clearance between the Stator shaft and the Reverse Input drum. Not saying that one doesn't exist, though. What does your manual tell you to do if the clearance is incorrect? In other words, how is this clearance adjusted?

I would think that because the Reverse Input drum sits on top of the Input Housing/Input shaft (hard contact with the selective washer and thrust bearing), one just needs to confirm that input shaft end play is in spec, adjust it as required with the selective washer and call it good.

Re: Reverse input drum endplay???

It doesn't say how to adjust it nor can I find a spec on it either. That .150" clearance I mentioned was between the reverse drum and sun gear shell. I need to learn to read a little better. I got a thicker thrust washer coming. I'm going to do some measuring to see what my clearance is. Afterwards i'll put one in there and call it good.

Re: Reverse input drum endplay???

There isn't a minimum or maximum clearance here. The reverse input drum floats and the only way to reduce the clearance was to install a bearing instead of the thrust washer and you had to change the RI drums front bushing to a longer one to hold the bearing in place (keep it centered). Did that many years ago, but there was no advantage to doing this.
