mini-spool?

my posi is slipping very bad. 10-bolt, 2-series carrier with thick 3.73's.
will this mini-spool work? or only for open diffs?
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-730075/overview/

or,....can i rebuild the posi easy and cheap?

thoughts? suggestions?

the car is not a daily driver. mostly a street raced car with some track time planned.

thank you, Joe

Re: mini-spool?

Mini-spools only go into open carriers.

Whether you can rebuild what you've got now, depends on what it is.

If it's a stock (or any other) Auburn, no. Eaton other than Gov-Bomb, yes. 9-bolt, definitely maybe.

Re: mini-spool?

Do you have a 10 bolt or a Borg Warner 9 bolt? If it's a 10 bolt then you probably have an Auburn, which can not be rebuilt. If you have a 9 bolt then it will have the Borg Warner LSD, which can be reconditioned at least 1 time.

A mini spool is for dirt track racing. Is this a dirt track car? A mini spool should never be used in a street car. If you have a 10 bolt then I recommend getting a new Eaton Posi, Yukon Dura Grip or Power Trax Grip LS. The Power Trax is probably the cheapest.

That ^^^^^^ depends on how one drives said vehicle, If it's not a daily driver or dogged around corners there shouldn't be any issue. A "street raced" car as Joe mentioned should be straight line just like the strip if he had a open diff. to add a spool, there was a spool put in my GMC (avatar) along with the 502 crate right from the dealer's lot in 1997, It's got 66,000 now without any issues......

Re: mini-spool?

Using a spool on the street with 26 spline axles is asking for a disaster. I have seen many rear end failures over the years because of spools being used on the street. It just puts too much stress on the axles, studs and wheels.

Re: mini-spool?

10-bolt.
i'll have to pull the cover and get pics.
kinda remember watching a vid from Tom's on youtube about tightening it up a while back. seems like i have the weak yellow springs if that makes any sense? heard they had green and red too.

yes, the car is mostly drag raced. just a small block, but about to hit it with spray. so i do want it safe. ive ripped the studs off a wheel years ago and thats no fun. so im best to stay away from a spool?

again, thank you

Re: mini-spool?

Even for drag racing, a mini spool in a 10 bolt is very weak. You would be better off welding your spiders together. Just don't tell anyone at the track that they're welded. You also need to weld them with a stick welder and some high nickel rods.

As mentioned above, a mini spool is designed for dirt track or off pavement use only where tire slippage is expected but you still need power to both wheels.

Re: mini-spool?

The Auburn can not be rebuilt. The unit that you saw Tom rebuilding is a Eaton, not an Auburn. When the Auburn wears out it is scrap meta. Take it out and toss it in your scrap metal pile and buy something else. Check on the Power Trax Grip LS and the Yukon Dura Grip prices. The Eaton is probably the best one, but it's also the most expensive. You should also seriously think about upgrading to 28 spline axles.

Re: mini-spool?

being a welder by trade, welding the spider gears could be a simple and cheap solution for now?

i guess i need to start saving my pennies for something better like what Ron posted.

as always, one step forward, 2 back.

Re: mini-spool?

If you are a welder then you know what happens to hardened steel when you weld it. The gears will be come brittle and may bust, causing a heck of a mess inside the rear end. It is also possible that the axles may come out if it breaks.

Re: mini-spool?

Another easier and maybe cheaper option would be to grab an open carrier or even a whole full open rear and tossing a $350 locker in it. No R&P gear setup needed, strong units that don't wear out.

I had a power trax lock rite in mine for years until I broke the pinion gear, then upgraded to a ford 9", then gave my dad my lock rite locker and he's been using it for the past 7 years or so..

Both me and my dad used the lock rite in daily driver cars with no probs.

Re: mini-spool?

I've got a Lock Right in my S10. It's been in there since '97 and it works great. It pops and jerks sometimes, but no big deal to me. I've put well over 150,000 miles on it.

To use a Lock Right you must have a good standard differential case. If you have been doing one wheel burnouts then there is a very good chance that your case is worn on the inside and won't work. A worn case will have too much clearance in it for the Lock Right to lock up.
