I'm rebuilding my axle now and want to know if I should go with lithium grease on the carrier and pinion bearings or should I just apply that on the wheel bearings?

Only use gear oil on the bearings, all of them.

Just because I'm curious, I read somewhere that you should use lithium grease on wheelbearings but why/why not?

 

I don't know that it would be any better or worse. I've never used it in a rear end. I'm not a fan of mixing different types of lube in a rear end, or anything else. I know of several times that mixing lubricants caused major problems and complete failure. Squirting the same gear oil into the axle bearings that will be used in the rear end has always worked for me and I don't see a need to mix any other type of lube in the rear end.

Wheel bearings use bearing grease, bearing in the diff are lubricated by the gear oil in the case. Do not use anything else in the diff.

 

aaah okay, must have missread somewhere. But seals should get some lithium grease right? I read that yesterday in the installation kit instructions

 

A little grease on the seals shouldn't hurt anything.
