v8 transmission for v6 ?
v8 transmission for v6 ?
Hello everybody,
I broke my 3.1 v6 1990 firebird transmission, and in Europe it's very dificult find spares. In USA it's easy, but the delivery it's so expensive as the gearbox, and I have found one in my country. But it's a V8 1987 5.0 Trans AM transmission. Do you know if can I adapt it ? the bolts position are diferent, and I supose that must be any kit to put it, with spacers and plat adapter. Is it ? what more I need? It will runs ok? were can I buy it ? Must I modifi something, the V8 it's bigger and the torque converter it's diferent too.
Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad English

Bolt pattern is identical. Might look different, but it's not.
The difference in that particular feature is the year model, not the engine type.

Your trans should look like the bottom one; the 87 will look like the top one. Be assured however, the bolts are in the same place.
All you will have to change is the clutch disc (use a V8 one); and of course you might need a speedometer gear to get that to read right.

I think he has an automatic but I might be wrong. Maybe he confused torque converter with clutch

You're right: sorry, I should have read more closely.
No, a V8 automatic will not fit a 6-cyl engine. In the manual trans like the above, the trans bolts to the bell housing. The auto however bolts directly to the engine and its bolt pattern is different.
You have no choice other than a 6-cyl transmission.

No, this will let you bolt the V8-spec 700R-4 to a 2.8 / 3.1

Good going, Sofa, scare the new guy away with wrong info, then not even admit you stand corrected. Couldn't you at least have suggested putting the V8 guts in the V6 case with a rebuild kit? I've done my own 700R-4 with a B&M kit, their instructions were good enough. It went from first and reverse to all 4 gears plus reverse. Since I did, he could.

Hello. Sorry for the delay in my answer.
Yes, I have an automatic transmission.
I found a kit to put a v8 into my v6 motor, but not for the third gen. It'sw consists in 1 inch thick aluminium adapter plate, torque converter drive-plate, bolt set, and cranck adapter:
http://www.transmissionadapters.com/...0%20series.htm
I really need all this pieces ? I have both torque converter, for the v6 and for the v8.
It's a heavy kit, and the delivery it's so expensive as the kit
thanks a lot

Hello. I have told with speedwaymotors, and this adapter will not go OK.
If must I built an adapter, have somebody the exactly sizes of the transmision and the holes size and position?
