Trans Issue/no resolve on threads

Just got my 92 Bird back on the road after sitting for 5 years. No major issues apart from the transmission acting strange after a couple of drives.
Was slipping real bad at the beginning so I checked the fluid and found it was low/out. Did not drive it when empty just moved it. Once filled booting it caused slippage and i backed off and then it would change gear. Long story short now it is fine in 1,2 and reverse but in overdrive or drive it does not change into 3 or 4th the revs just build and i coast till 2nd grabs again.

Read many threads but did not find a positive answer on the problem. Did spend time on the tv cable but that just changed the shift timing for me. Going to spend alot more today on the cable with the descripitive write up. So is it a rebuild or is it something simple that im overlooking?

Before she came off the road everything was fine.

Thanks guys and I welcome myself to this great looking Forum!

Re: Trans Issue/no resolve on threads

Sounds like the 3-4 clutch is smoked. Aka, rebuild time...

Re: Trans Issue/no resolve on threads

If you never drove it with low fluid, and only moved it a little the 3-4 clutches shouldn't have had a chance to get smoked. I guess it's possible something in the valve body could be stuck, but I've never heard of an actual case of this. I'd drop the pan and see what it looks like it inside. If it looks good, no metal or major clutch material, black burnt fluid, etc, I'd throw in a fresh filter and fluid. Then I would run it up on jack stands and try cycling the TV cable in and out rapidly to see if something frees up.

Re: Trans Issue/no resolve on threads

Ok Had a total rebuild. $1600 and now great but too sharp when shifting down or engaging gear. I hope it smooths out soon.
And yes you were correct 3 and 4 were smoked!
