when I bought my car the previous owner said he changed the trans well it went out so I pulled to change is there anyway to tell what it came out of.

 

Just above the pan gasket, stamped into the machined flat on the pass side of the trans is a code.
This code will tell you the model year, application, build date, and even the shift it was made.

Retrieve this, and google it for your answer.
