Need drum break axle shaft advice
Have a bad axle shaft. The rear came out of a 91, and it's a drum. I've seen some different stories about if a New axle will go right into a car with a drum rear end, or if a axle from a disc car will work in a drum rear end. Can anybody clear that up for me? I don't mind buying new, but there's a post on TGO that make me wonder. Here it is:
SO i need to know if I can take a shaft out of a disc rear and put in in my car, or I can order new ones if they are compatible with a drum rear end.
Are Drum/Disc Axles Interchangeable?
Yes, but the drum axle flange will have to be turned down to fit the rotor.* The flange diameter on the drum shaft is 6.0"; the disc shaft is 5.850" and the ID of the brake rotor is 5.900". (Oddly, there is no distinction made between drum and disc when ordering after market axles.)

Yes an axle from a disc will fit inside drums.
The problem is going the other way: the drum axles in earlier rears won't fit inside those old teeny tiny rotors.
