T5 shifter problems

Hey everyone!

I have some questions related to the shifter on my T5.
I was racing it earlier and the shifter completely went out and I couldn't find a gear at all so I tore into it and found some interesting stuff.

In the above picture is the shift rod and the pin is broken on the right side. I believe that happened a long time ago, but I never put enough force on the shifter to make the one side pop out of place from where the pins are seated as pictured below.

So my first question is should I get a new shift rod? I read something about those pins actually being one pin that can be removed from the rod, so is that a thing? My dad thought we could weld a pin onto the other side, which I guess is another option.

My second questions is what is this and where can I find it? It's that little plastic ring piece that rests over the pins and kind of protects it them from wearing down when being pushed against the spring, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

And my final question is should I be worried about this shifter bushing? It's bronze and I recently put it in in April this year, but it's a little rough around the inside edge.

Thanks for any help you can provide! I've never gotten into the shifter more than just replacing that bushing, so I'm not really sure about everything I'm looking into. I apologize if any of this is super basic and something I should have known already!

Re: T5 shifter problems

I don't know if you're going to find parts for the stock shifter without tearing another used shifter apart.

I always liked the Hurst Comp-Plus for the T5. But, there are other options available these days.

The bronze bushing up top just shows wear from the shifter hitting it. I always just replace the bushing with a stock one, secured with adhesive.

Thanks for the reply, I looked around some more and didn't find too much like you said. I looked a lot into new shifters and ended up on a Pro 5.0 as it seemed people kind of liked them more than the Hurst and it had a lower price. Hopefully it goes well!

You won't BELIEVE how much different an aftermarket shifter is from that stock POS... utterly incredible that the stock one is so bad.

In fact that was the very first mod I did to my 83; would have been in about fall of 85 or so.

You'd be happy with the pro 5.0 shifter, it's way better than stock. Hawks also sells a pro 5.0 kit with a billet shift **** that compliments the shifter nicely.

Re: T5 shifter problems

When I put mine in, I made the minor effort NOT to use the ball that came with the shifter. About the last thing I wanted was something SO FOREIGN to the rest of the car that it stuck out like a sore thumb; like the alien spaceship was hovering over it, and some piece of debris fell off and got stuck.

I made a bushing out of a bolt that was the same size & thread as the stock leather-covered ****, and drilled & tapped a hole in it to screw onto the shifter. Couldn't tell anything had changed, except it all worked so much better.
