Engine swap and 700r4 won't shift

Hi
I had a 305 and no tranny problems
One month ago I swapped in a 383. The tranny is a 700r4 and shifts fine in when I leave in drive or overdrive.
When I manually shift 1-2 is ok, 2-d engine revs to 6k and I back off.
Same problem d to overdrive with manual shifting
Some questions
What triggers shifting when car shifts in auto?
What triggers shifting when you manually shift?
Is this a tv cable issue or something else?

Any help is appreciated

Thanks for reply
Is it ok to drive in auto with no manual shifting

Is the problem basically blowing my engine due to high engine rpm- probably stupid question but I want a clear understanding

Thanks

Nope, do not drive it at all or you will blow the transmission, not the engine.

I'm not the most knowledgable in the inner workings of an auto transmission but pretty much the tv cable controls the line pressure inside the trans, when it's incorrectly set it will destroy a 700r4 very fast.

Luckily setting them is very easy to do and there are tons of videos and write ups about it.

Go under the hood and find the tv cable end that mounts to the bracket by the intake, press in on the D shaped button and slide the slider all the way in torwards the firewall. Then get in the car and press the gas pedal all the way to the floor, make sure you go all the way. As you push it to the floor you should hear the cables ratchet thing click as it slides out to the correct position.

Also double check you have the correct amount of automatic transmission fluid in the trans. Did you have the car running as you filled the trans fluid? I'm not doubting your mechanical skills when I say this, I just don't want you to blow the trans over something that's easily overlooked
