Blew Up my 700r4. What Now? Rebuild or New?

I've been having 3-4 clutch pack issues since my dad installed a trans go shift kit. I just lost 3-4 clutch pack again. The 3rd time it's went out. My dad is no stranger to GM transmissons and has rebuilt hundreds of them. He can't figure out why or what is causing it. TV cable and trans cooler are fine. He says it just time to start out new and find a different transmisson.

So what should I do? I was looking at JEGS rebuilt 700r4s. They seem decent and for a good price. Another option I was looking at was a 4L60e, since it does have a EFI 5.3 in it. Do you guys have any suggestions? And NO, a th350 or th400 is not a option. No way am I giving up overdrive.

BTW the motor is a built EFI 5.3 around 420hp/400tq....

If you can use the 4L60E LS series transmission here, and have the computer to run it, that would be the best way to go. The 700R4 can be setup to work very well here if you decide to fix it. Either way you go here, I have what you need for the transmission to build it correctly.

Sorry for the slow reply, been busy with work and setting up school. I went with another 700r4 that is totally getting rebuilt with a Fairbanks shift kit. Hopefully this one works better than the last one...

Watch out for the 1-2 bang shift with the Fairbanks setup.

What do you mean by 1-2 bang shift?

BTW the kit you sell looks awesome. Next time I need a 700r4 I'll have to order your kit for it.

Re: Blew Up my 700r4. What Now? Rebuild or New?

The Fairbanks kit has a way too firm of a 1-2 part throttle shift. With a 12" stock diameter torque converter, the 2nd feed hole in the separator plate when using a Corvette servo, should be at the largest .086". A .076" hole would be better here. With a 9.5" torque converter .099" at the largest and .093" to .096" for moderate/aggressive driving on the street. I have seen .110" to .125" on these kits years ago. Maybe they fixed it by now, and that would be good. Just watch what the 1-2 feed hole is, otherwise the 1-2 part throttle shift will be way too firm (bang shift) which is hell on the gear train.
