The new Summit 9 inch case and Currie rear uh oh
I have been messing with this Currie 9 inch for a few years now. I had a nodular case in there previously and had to make some cuts on the Currie bracket, to make it fit. I didn't cut into the thirdmember case because I was worried about weakening the already weak case.
Summit came out with these heavy duty thirdmember, which I decided to swap after I busted the pilot bearing out of the old housing.
The ribs on this casing are huge, and the bracket is inches away from bolting up. It looks like I would have to cut most of the ear off the middle rib to get it to fit. (chalked in yellow in the picture)
I am going to talk to Summit and Currie tomorrow to see what they say. Do you thing this will kill the strength of the casing? Looking at the Currie one the ribs are much smaller than the Summit case.
What about welding spacers to take up the extra space?
Any ideas are most welcomed.

I don't think it would be a problem..as its not going to taking anything from the 3rd ..that would make it weak...
you could always build up the plate on one side.. and cut away the inside to clear the rib...
but you could just trim away the rib..unless they tell you not to...I don't see why not..cast iron is so heavy anyway..

I was actually thinking that for the bracket. The bracket is cast, so I don't know how hard it would be to weld. I was thinking cutting some more out of the bracket and cut a little out of the rib.

I did a little more research on this thirdmember. It had PEM stamped on it, and looks like Summit just repackaged it.
I went to the PEM Racing website, they call it the Brute, and it is rated to 1200 hp, so I am feeling a little better about doing some surgery.
The Currie Nodular that "fits" is rated to 600, and the ribs are kind of rounded off and shortened looks like.

PEM is out at PMI, but i did talk to Summit.
They said cut the thirdmember and leave the Currie Bracket alone, since it is the weaker of the two.
I am going to cut the thirdmember, and take my bracket into my machine shop fab guys and have them re-enforce it.
Does anyone have a suggestion on additional bracing for the Currie mount? Maybe a vertical tube to strengthen the top part of the bracket?

The mount is pretty basic, can you fabricate a new one to fit the case? I wouldn'the chop the case all up if you can just make a new bracket
