Has anybody swapped a TR3650 in their car?
Looking to see if anybody has done this swap. I currently have a non World Class T5 in my 84 Trans Am and looking to upgrade. I contacted Hanlon Motorsports here in Pa and the owner suggested getting a TR3650 ( originally found behind the Modular 4.6 Ford motor in Mustangs). Supposedly they are a lot stronger than the T5 and parts are more readily available. Not all the parts for a T5 are being made anymore so if I got one built it would have some used parts in it. I am looking to have the Trans be capable of handling 400-450 up. I currently have a ZZ4 in it now but may do a cam/ head swap later.
Hanlon makes a an adapter to bolt the trans to a Chevy bellhousing but some fab work has to be done to the crossmember, an electronic Speedo is needed, time has to be changed and possibly the driveshaft shortened. Don't know if it's worth it to do all of that work or if there is an easier solution for a trans upgrade

Before starting, make sure you want the (wider) ratios. A ZZ4 and 3.73 rear is a poor candidate for more first gear, with 3.23 rear, it's a decent one. 5th is changeable, but not by much.
I think it is 31 spline output which is good. You will want to stick to a 26 spline input shaft.
In short though, if you want the ratios, start adding up the costs in changing. You researched most. And you talked to an expert of the Tremec stuff.
Elec. speedo, yoke and possibly driveshaft, re-tip the input pilot or use conversion bushing?
I think some guys on here talked about the GM TKO not requiring the adapter plate and driveshaft length change. And there are ratios different from the 3650 as well.
I am still a fan of the 2.9x first gear stuff, like a GTO ratio 6 speed.
