Is it worth paying more for a re-built T-5

Planning a swap from 700R4 to T-5 WC. Wondering if used T-5 WC units are usually OK or if it is worth it to pay much more for a re-built unit.

Also, is there a preferred vendor of either used or rebuilt T-5 transmissions. What about an ebay rebuild?

Re: Is it worth paying more for a re-built T-5

I've done a few auto-manual swaps and in every instance I brought the used T5 I had for the project to a professional tranny shop for inspection before installing it. The shop charges me $75-$100 to open up the case and take a peek inside for problems. IMO; money well spent; I'd rather pay for that 'insurance' rather than installing the whole set-up only to find that it's got to get pulled back out due to a undisclosed problem.

Depends on what your use for the car will be. Keeping long term or a pleasure/weekend car that won't see any hard launches or burn outs I would get it rebuilt. If you'll be selling the car soon I wouldn't invest the money. Daily driver or if you will be abusing the car I would look into a T56. They are stronger and the sixth gear will get you better gas mileage.

It depends. If you see a wreck in the local junkyard and you know the car ran fine, that is one to grab and not rebuild. If you are doing the work for a DD and don't want surprise downtime in case a used unit needs work, you should have it gone through to do it once, not twice. I would hate to R&R an automatic twice. A manual, I would laugh and do it.

Thanks for the reply's. I probably wont be selling the car anytime soon. I'm leaning toward a rebuilt unit.
