What is the clip that goes before the torque conv??

So I am changing my fluid and filter on my v6 700r4 and I took the metal shield off that lets you see the torque converter. I was wiping everything down and I accidentally bumped this metal snap ring that goes before the torque converter. It has four prongs that snap on. I cant get it back on as there is no space to maneuver. Its just hanging there. What is it for?? Can I leave it there? Will it make noise while driving? Or can i just break it and remove it?

If it is was I am thinking it is, it helps hold the front seal in place. The seal can pop out due to excessive fluid pressure on it.

Well do you think I can run safely without it? I broke one of the tabs trying to put it back on and removed it. I will be filling it up and test driving it.

Most likely be OK without it. Not sure when GM started to add the front seal retainer. But there is a lot of 700R4s out there without it.

Cool. Yeah I'm running without it now. Seems good. I think it may be leaking a bit though. I was wondering about the Lucas trans fix and stop leak. My trans doesn't slip but from all the reviews I think I could benefit from it. When I did my fluid/filter change there was quite a bit of friction material on the magnet and in the fluid. Have you ever tried it? Hoping it could slow down my leak. Also maybe this is the wrong section but the cap on my power steering pump seems to leak. From what I see it doesn't have a gasket just a spring typething. Is there a gasket I'm missing?
