Rear axle question

Probably a stupid question, but here goes...

I'm gathering parts for a T56 swap in my '88 L98 T5 swapped IROC.

I'm currently running a 2.77 rear gear, which is way off from what I need for running the T56.

Since the current rear axle is a 2 series carrier, I found a '91 V6 Camaro, which has a 3.42 rear axle.

Obviously, at a minimum I'd probably want to have a posi, but I'm thinking I'll at least have a 3 series carrier, which frees up some ratio choices, though I'll probably stay around 3.42, like the 4th gen Camaro...

I'd also like to put disc brakes back on the rear, which a PO had replaced with an open diff, and drums.

Is this workable, or am I barking up a bad tree? I'm trying to keep the cost somewhat reasonable, since I'm trying to do a transmission swap at the same time.

Re: Rear axle question

Considering the 91 V6 is a drum rear, you're looking at buying adapters from FlynBye. You can look in the Vendor forum for details on that.

Probably a lot easier to find a disc rear end to start with. 93-up rears usually have decent rear discs. They're wider, so there's that....

Re: Rear axle question

Easier, yes...but I’d rather keep the factory IROC wheels.

Re: Rear axle question

People have run a 4th gen rear with stock thirdgen wheels. They'll just stick out to the very edge of the quarter panel flares. Personally it looks off to me, but that hasn't stopped a bunch of people.

Worst part of the 9-bolt is lack of support parts. You might want to find the thread about the Aussie carrier that mostly will drop in the 9 bolt housing. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...installed.html
Then just have to find a gear set. And one year only 9-bolt PBR discs.

Or try to find a 91-92 10-bolt disc rear, and drop in a new carrier and gear set... Or save the pennies and pick up a custom built rear axle like a 9" Ferd or 12 bolt, or 8.8 Ferd...

Pretty much all the options suck. Anything stock is probably going to be due for a rebuild. Anything new is going to be expensive. The 6cyl 10-bolt you'll want to change the carrier to limited slip, and install new gears, bearings, etc. But then you've got $$$ invested in a 10 bolt that could have been applied to a 9" or something stronger.
