Fresh bench rebuild, just got it on the road today. It's a 1989.

R, 1st and 2nd are fine. Won't shift past 2nd. It does not freewheel like the 3/4 pack is gone, it just never attempts to go past 2nd into 3rd. I've tried leaving the stick in OD, D, and shifting from 2 to D, it just stays in 2nd with no attempt to shift further.

My transmission guy is closed today, figured I'd shoot a message out here just in case it could be something simple. He said my governor was damaged so he tossed in a spare one, could that be the issue? I do get a good 1-2 shift, just nothing else.

You have lost the 3-4 clutch pack. Very common.

 

Naah, this is a fresh build (0 miles), and it's not even attempting to throw into 3rd, it just stays in 2nd. I know what a bad 3/4 feels like, this isn't slipping, it's just never attempting 3rd. It's back at the shop, I got tired of working on it so finally farmed it out.

 

Check and make sure you are now low on fluid. Sometimes places dont refill after the trans runs and the fluid distributes.

 

I installed and filled it. Level was good. Something else is wrong, he's still got it out and apart. Told him dont worry about rushing it just get it right, need to stop worrying about the dumb trans.
