plastic vent on top of 10 bolt???

There is a plastic vent on the top of a 10 bolt rear end I purchased that was brittle and broke off. What is it and where do I get a replacement?

Re: plastic vent on top of 10 bolt???

it is a vent that allows air to escape the rear axle housing as it heats up. This prevents oil from being pushed out past the seals. Not sure if you can still get stock new ones, if so they are just a light press fit.

Otherwise there are off the shelf vent units that may be able to be used.

It is important as it not only vents pressure, but prevent water from getting into the housing.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of aggravation.....So you either have to siphon it out thru the fill plug or take off the inspection plate or cover and buy a new gasket..and a new cover with a drain plug...Nice...

I keep whole tubes full of tubular style ones on hand at all times... they look something like this... there's a variety specifically for rear axles
