please don't laugh at me

I have a 91 RS 5.0 L03....
Its an auto
is it the 700r4???
can someone please explain to me how a dang auto tranny works.... What is a Stall Converter??? do I have one now, why would a different one work better???

what is that website, I heard someone talking about it a long time ago, it was something like "howitworks.com" or something like that.... it tells how different things work.... i think they were talking about a rotary engine...

thanks, but i would really like to know how this thing that is sitting under my car works.... its confusing me...

thanks guys, and please don't think i'm an idiot, the only dumb question is the one that goes unasked.... (or so i'm trying to convince myself)

Maybe you'll get better results asking about your transmission on the Transmissions and Drivetrain board.

Auto tranny is very complicated and the torque converter is also not so simple. Simple in theory but complex in function. The website you want to check out is howthingswork.com
They have a good description about it. It's so complex that I don't even want to attempt to brief you. Use www.google.com and search for torque converter stall flash speed ratings. Those words usually bring up descriptions that are good reads for a boring nite. I'm moving this to the tranny board.

Re: please don't laugh at me

sorry i got a little long winded,

1)no i believe it is a 4L60 which really is the 700R-4 renamed in 91 (verify this)
2)how it works? just think of it as a standard that does all the shifting and clutch work for you via fluid pressure.
the pump in the transmission is turned by th engine. the resulting fluid goes through your valve body and onto bands, silenoids and whatnot to engage the different gears. gears are shifted mostly by pressures which vary according to speed.
3) a stall converter is like an automatic engaging clutch.
it slips when the engine is idling and grabs harder as it revs up.
4)yes you have one; but don't mess with it now. you can spend money better elsewhere.
to answer your question, converters lock up or engage at different speeds. people want higher stall speeds or engagement when they want to take off faster. this is done by not putting a load on your engine until it gets into it's powerband (rpm range with most power). most street people go for a stall speed from 500 to 1500 above stock although you will affect fuel economy and may affect drivability if you go to to high a stall speed. imagine the pita if you are trying to drive in stop and go traffic and you have to rev up to 3K before you can move.

also, the website you're looking for is www.howstuffworks.com

they may be able to provide an explanation as to how an automatic transmission and torque converter works. or else, ask any of the tranny guys on the board (probuilt comes to mind right now)

A 4LO6 and 700R4 are the same tranny and the names are interchangeable.

thanks guys, you guys made it simple to understand

so basically a higher stall just "pops" the clutch at a higher rpm... interesting....
that is very cool, but i have to say i want a 5spd.... NOW!!!!, lack of funds are a problem however.... hahaha
looks like my big plans are gonna have to wait now, i got a letter from the insurance today and they are cancelling cuz of my tickets and suspension, so i'm screwed....
anyway, if anyone has any suggestions on insurance that will cover a risk at a reasonable price, i'd appreciate the suggestions, thanks guys....
