hello, I bought a 1991 bird,305 tbi a/t and the speedo and odometer does not work so I pulled the vss off the tail shaft and there is no speedo gear attached? is there supposed to be one there?

 

Didja look in the hole? The gear just slips on the D shaft. There's no retainer, it can slide right off when you remove the sender.

 

there should be a gear of some sort in there. not all 700r4 used VSS, some were cable driven. There is a chance someone took it out maybe? maybe they put a new rear gearing in and didnt want to see a messed up speed on the gauges? or maybe like drew said, maybe it fell out

 

thanks drew and racerx520! I took a small mirror and flash light and saw the speedo gear laying up inside!

 

Just to clarify, the driven gear is generally a bit cone shaped. The drive gear will be partially visible in the hole, you'll just see the edge that drives the VSS gear.
