I am confused!! Autometer Speedo vs stock speedo cable vs VSS
Ok I am trying to figure out what I should do here. I currently have an 88 camaro(was a V6 but now has a 350) with a stock speedo cable. It is a WC T5. I want to use an Autometer Ultralite 200 MPH speedometer. I know that I can use the mechanical one with no real problems except for the gears in the rear(will have 4.11's) I don't want to change out the transmission gear located in the tailshaft section so I started looking at the Autometer Electronic programmable unit. It is self calibrating so there is no need to swap out speedo cable gears. But, since this speedo is electronic, do Ineed to swap over to VSS and then splice the autometer into it? I have no experience with the VSS so I'm not sure if that will work. Any help or info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul Moore

Why don't you change out the speedo gears in the tranny? That would be a lot easier than buying a reprogrammer or something.
Just change the speedo gear man.

You can pick up a VSS that plugs right into the cable port on the trans. If you can't find it in Jeg's or Summit you can probably get it from a 4x4 place. That and the electronic speedo will let you adjust for any given gear/tire combo by simply pushing a button, driving 2 miles, and pushing it again. You'll also still be able to use it if you ever go T56, or back to EFI.
The mechanical speedo is a good bit cheaper though.

Yeah, I also don't have cruise control either so I guess that should work then. Just get a VSS from a 5 speed f body, put it in the transmission, and then run the wires from the VSS to the speedometer. Thanks for your help on this.
