I had to rebuild my differential and a I bought a whole package with yukon posi and a ring pinion set from richmond. The differential is very loud during operation - loud grinding and whining noises from the rear. I am being told that the reason for this is that the cog surface is not smooth, ie it's got a scratched and coarse finish as the result of the machining. I am being assured that the alignment/spacing adjustment of the gears is correct and to the specification.

Is this normal for these gears to be noisy during operation?
Is there a viable workaround? If not can anyone one suggest a set of gears that will assure smooth and quiet function?

No.

A properly-set-up rear end should make no noise at all. Apparently, the unit was assembled improperly with wrong bearing preload/incorrect backlash setup.

The unit will have to be disassembled, and any now-damaged parts replaced, and then properly re-assembled and set up by someone with the skill and special tools required to do the job correctly.

 

Pinion depth, backlash and bearing preload must be set correctly for the gears to mesh properly. If anything is not set correctly then you will have noise. It's probably not the fault of the gears. It's probably the fault of the person who installed them.

 

I am running Richmond gears in my camaro and they are pretty quiet. There's no noise coming from the rear of my car at any speed. I agree with the other posters, I would have the rear end looked at and would have everything measured again. Better now then before any damage is done.

Not necessarily, Fix it asap. Richmond gears are a little noisier than oem or US gear, however not as you are describing here.

 

With 1000 miles on them and the noise that he is describing, I don't think there is much hope for making them quiet. It's possible, but not likely.

Use oem, US Gear or Yukon instead of Richmond. Make sure you use GM posi additive. Use Lubrication Engineers oil if you can.
