Thick gears?

I'm in the process of building a drag car and when I went to install a mini spool yesterday, I realized the car has 2.73s in it. So, definitely not the most ideal for drag racing. With that being said, I am looking to replace the gears. I know that it is a series 2 carrier. Is there any difference in strength between a thick gear set and thin? I am not opposed to replacing the whole carrier if need be.

Re: Thick gears?

Not especially. The weakness is at the tooth typically. I'd just get the set that will fit your carrier.

Re: Thick gears?

The thick gear might be a little stronger due to it being more rigid, but it will also have more rotating mass. Most racers want to reduce rotating mass as much as possible. Mini spools are not very strong, so if you think you are building a stronger by using one then you better be careful. When a mini spool goes bad it can stop working on one side and might turn your car into the wall or other lane.

It started out as an open diff, and I didn't really want to go through the hassle of putting a limited slip, new clutches into a drag car only, so the option was a mini spool. The car won't be making that much power right now, so I am not that worried about it. I am more worried about the transmission not handling the power than the rear end

Re: Thick gears?

OK, just be careful with it. I've seen several of these break, mostly in the 7.5 rear ends.
